To understand, or rather, to feel this work, you need to stand directly under the bar and look at it. To do this, you’ll have to lift your head and look up. The inability to reach, jump, or catch it takes you back to childhood, when boys would struggle on the bar to strengthen, prove their strength, and simply grow.
But the horizontal bar remains unattainably high. And this, perhaps, allows us to see the infinity and futility of our aspirations, that is, to look into the future. Thus, peering simultaneously into the past and the future, the viewer at this point will, I hope, find the present.
